Over the course of six days, from November 5th to the 13th, 65 Hudson High School students and 6 teachers participated in the Youth Voice Center's Power of Peace Workshop. The Youth Voice Center was founded by Executive Director and Creator of the Power of Peace Workshop Michael Arterberry, who has a long and successful history working with youth in the area.
Each of the three experiential workshops were two full days with three trainers, two teachers and 15-25 students. The students were randomly chosen to represent multiple ages, races, religions, etc. During the two days, the groups are isolated from the rest of the school population to focus on skills like positive youth development, leadership, conflict resolution, teamwork and collaboration, decision making, respect for others and self and, accepting differences in others. The program is designed to enable young people to become skilled at, experience and apply the knowledge of resolving conflicts, understanding, teamwork and cooperation and respect for others who are different so that their schools and communities are safer and more productive places for themselves and their peers.
One student said, "You have made a huge impact on my life and the way I see things. I'm honored I could participate in your workshop."
A parent of a participant said "my son hasn't stopped talking about it since I walked in the door tonight. Obviously it had a positive impact on him and from what he says, for many others as well."
Michael and his colleagues will be returning for six more days of Level 1 training for 75 more students and 6 teachers in February and 50 more students will participate in Level 2 training in the spring.
