As our students found out on the first day of school, school lunches are a little bit different this year. Mrs. Obama is hoping to combat the growing problem of childhood obesity by changing the government-subsidized school meals, which is aimed at getting kids more fruits and green vegetables to breakfasts and lunches and reduces the amount of salt and fat. Gone are the white breads, whole milk and salt shakers, which have been replaced with whole wheat buns and a daily salad bar.
Although I can't say the changes have been well received so far this year, the students are beginning to adjust and trying to understand why the school is trying to provide as nutritious a meal as possible. More to come on this issue for sure, but for those students still not happy about the lunches, you can always bring your own lunch as long as it is not delivered or fast food, which is against the Code of Conduct.
