As most of you know, the past month has been challenging to say the least. With a temporary and unexpected change in leadership at Hudson High School came several new responsibilities for me in addition to my role as Associate Principal. For the first couple of weeks, I thought I could have handled it, but I soon realized that was not going to be the case. So first, I am thankful to Mr. Rochler, our school safety officer, for being patient with me as I figured out that we needed more help. As I began doing more work as principal, Bob really extended himself by taking on additional tasks as well as his normal safety officer responsibilities.
Next, I am thankful to Mrs. Millar, Physical Education teacher at Hudson High School, for stepping up and temporarily becoming my “Acting Associate Principal.” She volunteered to come out of the gym and help me by taking on the bulk of student management and discipline. I would have enjoyed it if she could have stayed on, but completely understand her reasons for returning to the gym (and pool).
Third, thanks to Mr. LaCasse for temporarily leaving his Social Studies classroom and filling in as our Dean of Students and Mr. Capuano for replacing him. So far, the transition has been seamless. I have only heard positives from the staff and students about both appointments.
Fourth, I am thankful for the faculty, staff and students at Hudson High School. This is now the fifth administrative configuration in the high school in the past five years. Throughout all of it, the faculty and staff have done a tremendous job of not allowing these changes to distract our students or affect the quality of the education that our students receive.
Our student achievement rates, albeit not yet to our satisfaction, are improving. Graduation rates and Regents Exam passing rates are steadily increasing over the past two years. Total referrals this year are down nearly 25% compared to last year at this time. Out of School Suspensions have decreased nearly two-thirds compared to last year. All of this is proof of the level of determination and resolve in our faculty and staff.
Through all of this change, one constant still remains. We still have a shared responsibility to ensure that every student, every day, receives the best possible education at Hudson High School.
Happy Thanksgiving to all!!!
