On Wednesday, October 9th, students and staff from Hudson High School wore orange to unite against bullying and bring awareness to students who have been bullied in school. October is National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month and HHS decided to join forces the National Bullying Prevention Center to promote their annual Unity Day by wearing the color orange. Students from the HHS Gay Straight Alliance gave out orange ribbons to support the cause.

Ms. Brust and Mr. Cukerstein's classes took a virtual field trip with their Humanities and AP World 10 classes today in the library. The Field Trip was organized between the two teachers, Terry Harcleroad, HCSD Technology Director, and Penn Museum, located in Phildelphia, PA. The students were taken through the process of ancient Egyptian embalming by museum educators. Using fabricated mummies, students got to explore mummification as they witnessed each step of the process including brain removal, evisceration, desiccation and wrapping. Students were also able to ask questions at the end of the presentation as well as interact with the presenters throughout the demonstration. The Living Environment 10E class was put to the challenge of constructing an egg protection system to protect eggs from a drop of 6 ft high. The goal of the project was to have students go through the scientific method process in order to solve a problem. Each team of 4 students was required to represent a university of their choice and brainstorm an idea for their egg protector. This became their hypothesis. Then they wrote a grant proposal that must have been approved before they could continue. They designed, built and tested their egg protection systems and wrote a formal lab report. Finally, they demonstrated their product to the class and many groups even chose to test their product further by dropping the eggs from heights above 6 ft. A huge thank you to Coaches Chuck Peters, Mary Hunter and the Hudson High School Volleyball Team for playing yesterday's game in honor of former HHS Volleyball player Erica Wordon ('07). The Bluehawks beat Germantown in straight sets 26-24, 25-22 and 25-13 and was led by Cori Jepsen, Nae Nae Sheard, Kelsey Alvarez and, Veronica "the Mayor" Mayhew. The fundraiser generated over $1,200, which will be donated to Erica to aid with her medical expenses. Research has shown that parental involvement is the number one factor in determining student success across all ages, backgrounds, and ethnicities. ParentEdge is a service specifically designed to increase parental involvement and improve student academic performance through a personalized daily text message and/or email informing parents what their child has been assigned for upcoming classes.
The message informs parents if there is any homework to be done that night, if there are tests or quizzes coming up, and anything else the teacher feels like including. The service works because it requires almost zero effort from all stakeholders: teachers, parents, and administrators. The teachers log on to ParentEdge every morning and enter the asssignment for the night. At 3:30 every afternoon, an individualized text and/or email will be sent to parents. Parents are able to have one cell number and up to three email addresses. All parents are enrolled in this program automatically. If you are not receiving these texts/emails, please contact any of your child's teachers, guidance or the principal's office to ensure we have accurate information on file. Students will serve adults freshly brewed Strongtree coffee and delicious breakfast goodies in an effort to spread kindness throughout the campus. This experience is a learning opportunity where students will develop functional life skills like socialization, communication, confidence, math skills, responsibility, generosity, kindness and more! The cart is self-sustaining and any revenue by way of donations will be used for the class’ participation in the May games of the NYS Special Olympics, community experiences and also donated to the McKinney Vento Kindness Closet which the class will be operating as well. The students are shown doing a practice run before their official kickoff next week. A special thank you to Scott DiMonda for helping the class construct the cart that was donated by Williams Lumber. A huge thank you to Nora and Chris at Strongtree Coffee and Continental Mills. Welcome back to Hudson High School!!!
Great strides were made last year in improving not just the academics at Hudson High School but also the culture. As important as it is that the graduation rate rose from 58% in 2012 to 70% in 2013 or that referrals were down nearly 30% from last year, it is equally important that Hudson High School becomes a school that students WANT to attend, as opposed to one they HAVE to attend. We will build on this success that we had from activities like Field Day and the mission statement project from last year and seek input from all of you on building a vision statement that defines what we want this building to become. I would like to thank Alaja Ocasio for her creativity in word-smithing the new Hudson High School Mission Statement, “Together we Learn, Tomorrow we Lead.” It may only be six words long, but the school community feels that it encapsulates everything our school community covets. As we begin the start of the 2013-14 school year, I would like to thank the staff members that work diligently throughout the summer preparing the school to be ready on opening day. As fast as the summer months seem to pass by, it has been nice to see so many teachers entering the building with smiles on their faces as they prepare for another school year. Fall sports season has begun and I am anxiously awaiting our “Friday Night Lights” home opener against Ravena on September 13th. Mark your calendars for October 10th, as we have moved the Homecoming football game up a day to allow for the impending 4 day weekend. We have made every effort in preparing student schedules to include as many electives as possible and anticipate schedules being mailed out on Wednesday, August 28th. If there is an error on your schedule, please wait until school begins to correct because the guidance counselors are not available. If you have study halls, the teachers have been given a listing of elective courses that still have available space. If something interests you, please see a guidance counselor or me to change your schedule. In closing, I am excited to begin another school year as an administrator in the high school. There are positive changes that will continue this year and we will continue to work diligently to make your time at Hudson High School the best experience possible. To the seniors, Thank you Hudson High School Class of 2013 for making this a wonderful year and, certainly, a class to be remembered. As a first year principal, this is a group that will not be forgotten. As I think over the past three years, there are so many memories that we have shared together. It has been my honor to serve as your leader this year and I look forward to continuing to watch each of you grow as you become leaders in our community. You have set an extremely high standard for future classes at HHS. Proud to belong, Tiney Abitabile |
